Windows XP SP3 - Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) with NLA

by Peter Chodyra on Wednesday, April 08, 2009 8:29 AM

If you are trying to connect to a Windows Server 2008 through RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) you are probably getting this error message:

An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x80090327)

You are getting the above error message probably because NLA (Network Level Authentication) is not enabled on your Windows XP. NLA is a new security measure from Microsoft allowing RDC Login to authenticate your session before loading the server or remote computer terminal session. On Windows XP, NLA is disabled by default and needs to be enable manually.

To enable NLA you will need to make some registry changes. Here is a link to the full article from Microsoft on how to enable NLA on Windows XP SP3.
